About this product

Product Information

Betsy Whyte was born into a family of travellers who roamed the Scottish countryside between the wars. The summers were the best times, out on the open road, whilst winters were spent in houses, pining for the first sign of spring - the yellow on the broom. This is her own story of her childhood.

  • Engaging memoir by Scottish Traveller

The memoir is written by a twentieth century Scottish Traveller, set mostly in Angus. She gives an insight into a way of life that is alien to the average city dweller. I was a teacher in an Edinburgh school forty years ago, and we had children from this community from time to time: what challenges they faced.

  • Content far excels the quality of publication

The merits of Betsy Whyte's captivating 1930s autobiography deserve a better quality publication. The original hardback did it much better justice, and there has been one paperback edition that was good. But most are meagre, both in format and quality of paper (now browning). Unfortunately this was one of those latter kind. . .

  • Yellow on the broom

What a fascinating insight into the life of a travelling family through the eyes of a young girl. She gives you a real feel of what her life was truly like on the road. Her days spent in a school where she was always picked on was an eye opener too. A brilliant read which I recommend.
